Over recent years, many of our customers have decided to go “paperless”. One obstacle to this can be the need for patients to sign documents – for example, Patient Consent forms.

To assist with this, ClinicOffice has the ability to integrate with a WACOM STU-300 digital signature scanner.

What does it cost?

Integration with the WACOM STU-300 is a feature of the Documents and Scanning add-on module of ClinicOffice, so if you don’t already have that module then you will need to purchase it, or add it to your subscription (if you have a HOSTED ClinicOffice account).
The only other cost is the purchase of the device itself.

Good question. For several years, legislation in the UK, the EU, the US and Canada has permitted the use of electronic signatures as being legally binding.

The UK has adopted and implemented certain provisions of the EU’s Electronic Commerce Directive in the Electronic Communications Act 2000, which makes electronic signatures legally admissible in the UK.

For countries in the EU, the 1999/93/EC Directive on Electronic Signatures was signed in December 1999 to establish a common framework for electronic signatures.

In the US, the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (“E-Signature Act”) became effective on October 1st 2000.

However, we always recommend that you check with the official governing body of your profession in your country for guidance.

The digital signature scanner needs to interface with the ClinicOffice software, however in a Hosted environment the program is actually running on a completely different computer (i.e. one of our cloud servers) while the device is plugged in to your local computer – hence the two cannot directly communicate with one other.

However, we have cunningly written a utility which ‘bridges the gap’, allowing you to use a locally installed signature pad with the ClinicOffice Hosted Edition and this utility is freely available to our customers. Please contact us for more details.
