Shared database over the internet

Within CO it’s possible to share a database, so several people can use one database within a local network. Do you have an instruction on how to share a database over the internet, so people can use one database from a remote location? Is it necessary that the hosting computer runs on Windows server or is, let’s say, Windows 7 also OK?
